Rediscovering Yourself Again: A Guide to Finding Your Purpose and Passion in Midlife
You hit that midlife point and all of a sudden seem to be questioning yourself about finding your purpose in life, or reawakening a part of you that feels lost or pushed to the side
Let’s be honest: most of us didn’t get to this stage of life without following a lot of rules. We built careers, raised families, cared for everyone else, and ticked off the boxes of what a “good life” is supposed to look like. From the outside, it may even look like you’ve done everything right.
But on the inside? You might feel restless, uninspired, or like you’re living on autopilot. You catch yourself wondering: Is this it? Is this really my purpose in life?
If that thought has been circling in your mind, it’s not a sign that something is wrong with you. It’s a signal that something in you is ready for more: more meaning, more joy, more alignment with who you are now.
The good news? Purpose isn’t something you either have or don’t have. It’s something you can rediscover, piece by piece, by reconnecting with yourself and daring to imagine the next chapter of your life on your own terms.
Why We Often Lose Ourselves Before Finding Our Purpose in Life

If you’ve reached midlife and feel like you don’t know yourself anymore, you’re not alone. Women are experts at putting themselves last. For years, maybe even decades, your identity was wrapped up in being someone else’s support system: the dependable partner, the reliable employee, the steady mother, the friend who never drops the ball.
That’s why finding your purpose in life can feel so confusing now. You’ve spent so long living by roles and expectations that you may have forgotten what lights you up.
It’s a natural part of midlife. A season of transition where the roles that once defined you begin to shift. The nest empties, careers evolve, relationships change. Suddenly, you’re left with space to ask the questions that were buried under responsibilities for years: Who am I now? What do I want next?
These questions, they’re an invitation not a midlife crisis. An opportunity to rediscover your purpose, your passions, and what it means to live with intention, — with fun, freedom, and fulfillment. To create a life by design not by default
What Finding Your Purpose in Life Really Means (It’s Not as Complicated as It Sounds)
Let’s clear something up right now: finding your purpose in life doesn’t mean you have to quit your job, move across the world (unless you want to), or discover some earth-shattering mission.
Purpose isn’t about pressure. It’s about alignment.
Moreover, it’s about waking up in the morning and knowing your days actually reflect who you are, not just the roles you’ve been playing for everyone else. It’s about making choices that match your values and spark joy, instead of just doing what’s expected.

I know how easy it is to lose that. For years, my identity was tied up in what I did for others. On paper, everything looked “good.” But inside, I felt like I was just going through the motions. I had checked all the boxes, and yet the spark was gone.
And here’s what I had to learn: your purpose isn’t hiding in some far-off dream. It’s right here, waiting in the parts of you you’ve put on pause.
The hobbies you loved but abandoned.
The parts of you that come alive when you’re creating, travelling, connecting, or leading.
The dreams you quietly shelved because they didn’t fit the life you were “supposed” to build.
Finding your purpose in life is about giving yourself permission to dream again and then daring to believe that you actually deserve that life you imagine.
Because you do.
Signs You’re Ready to Rediscover YourSELF, YOur Purpose and Passion
You’re not having a midlife crisis just because you know you’re ready for more, for a change. Most women I work with can’t point to one big moment — it’s more of a whisper. A quiet tug that says: “This isn’t enough anymore. I want something different.”
Maybe you’ve noticed it too. That restless feeling when life looks fine on the outside but feels flat on the inside. The way you find yourself going through the motions — school runs, work emails, family dinners — but wondering, “When do I get to live my life again?” “I can’t keep doing this”, “I’m so tired of adulting”.

It shows up in the little things:
- You can’t remember the last time you felt lit up by something just for you.
- You’ve started asking yourself questions you never used to — Who am I now? What do I want?
- The roles that once defined you don’t quite fit anymore.
These aren’t signs of failure. They’re invitations. Your soul’s way of nudging you back toward yourself.
And if you’re feeling them? It means you’re ready. Ready to rediscover what makes you feel alive. Moreover, ready to remember your passions. Ready to create a chapter that feels like yours, not just the one you inherited.
Step 1: Start With Self-Discovery
Here’s the truth: you can’t find your purpose in life if you’ve lost touch with yourself. And that happens to so many of us. We get so caught up in being everything for everyone else that one day we look in the mirror and think, “I don’t even know what I want anymore.”
That’s where self-discovery comes in. It’s not about reinventing yourself into someone brand new. It’s about peeling back the layers of roles and expectations until you reconnect with the woman underneath. The one who still has dreams, desires, and a voice that’s been waiting to be heard.
Start simple. Ask yourself: What makes me feel alive? When do I feel most like myself? What have I silenced or set aside because it didn’t fit into the life I was “supposed” to live?
This isn’t fluff work, this is the foundation. Because once you start hearing yourself again, everything else — your passions, your values, your purpose — starts to fall into place.
And let me say this clearly: you’re allowed to want more. You’re allowed to listen to your own needs. You’re allowed to make space for yourself. In fact, you can’t live with purpose until you do.
Self-discovery is where you stop waiting for permission and start listening inward. It’s where you remind yourself: I’m still here. My needs matter. My voice counts.
Because the truth is, you can’t find your purpose in life until you first find yourself again.

Step 2: Your Compass for Finding Purpose in Life – Clarify Your Core Values
If self-discovery is about peeling back the layers, then your values are what you find underneath. They’re the compass that points you back to yourself.
The thing is so many of us are living by values that aren’t even ours. We’ve inherited them, absorbed them — from family, culture, religion, workplaces — and we never find the time to stop and to ask, Does this still fit me? Are these actually my values? Do they align with what I want? With the woman I want to be?
That’s why finding your purpose in life feels so slippery when your values aren’t clear. You end up chasing things you think you “should” want, instead of what actually makes you feel alive.
Let me put it plainly: your values are the non-negotiables. They’re what make life feel aligned instead of heavy. When you honour them, life flows and its exciting. When you ignore them, life feels like a grind.
So let’s get practical:
Those that you circled; are your compass, your north star and the start of your journey towards something that’s yours.
Living with purpose isn’t about overhauling your entire life overnight. It’s about making small, daily choices that line up with those values.
When you do, everything changes: the way you spend your time, the relationships you nurture, the opportunities you say yes to. Suddenly, your days start looking like you.
And here’s the best part: your values are yours alone. They don’t have to match anyone else’s. Also, they don’t have to be explained, defended, or justified. They just have to be honoured.
Noticing them, embracing them and honoring your values – that’s how you start creating a life by design, not by default.
Step 3: Reconnect With Your Passions — Fuel for Finding Your Purpose in Life

Here’s what I know: somewhere along the way, most of us set our passions aside. Not because we didn’t care, but because life got busy. Careers. Kids. Aging parents. Bills. Survival. Before you know it, years have gone by and you can’t even remember the last time you did something that was just for the joy of it.
Your passions are not frivolous extras — they’re fuel. They’re the sparks that guide you back to yourself and breathe life into your purpose.
Think of it this way: your values are the compass, but your passions are the fire that keeps you moving forward. When you reconnect with them, you stop living on autopilot and start feeling alive again.
So how do you rediscover them?
- Make a joy list. Write down the activities, moments, or experiences that make you lose track of time. Think back to childhood, your 20s, even last year. Passion leaves a trail, so follow it.
- Notice what excites you now. What podcasts are you drawn to? What conversations light you up? What do you find yourself daydreaming about? Those aren’t random; they’re clues.
- Experiment without pressure. Pick one small thing that sparks your curiosity and try it. Paint. Travel. Take a class. Join a group. The goal isn’t to be “good” at it, the goal is to feel alive.
Here’s the part most women miss: you don’t have to wait until you’ve got your “whole life purpose” figured out before you follow your passions. It works the other way around. By following your passions — step by step, day by day — you start finding your purpose in life naturally.
And please hear me on this: you’re allowed to follow what lights you up. You’re allowed to create joy just for you. That joy isn’t selfish, it’s the bridge to discovering your purpose and becoming the best version of yourself.
Step 4: Clearing the Way for Finding Your Purpose in Life

It’s not usually the present that keeps us stuck. It’s actually the weight of the stories we’ve been carrying around for years, the voices in our head that don’t always speak kindly to us.
The ones that whisper in the back of your mind:
“I’m too old to start over.”
“This is just how life is now.”
“Wanting more makes me selfish.”
“Who do I think I am?”
“I should be grateful. I should be happy.”
Those voices feel heavy because they’ve been with you for so long. They’ve shaped the way you see yourself. But the thing is: those stories are not facts. They’re just old records, playing on repeat and holding you back and they don’t have to be the soundtrack of your life anymore. The moment you start questioning them, you loosen their grip.
Ask yourself: Who told me this story? Where did it come from? Why do I still believe it? And do I want to carry it into the next chapter of my life?
Because here’s the reality: you are not too old, and it is not too late. Midlife is not an ending, it’s an awakening. It’s the moment you finally lay down the stories that kept you small and choose the ones that set you free. The ones that help you create a life you love by design, not by default.
This is where your true journey begins; in letting go of the lies that told you you weren’t allowed to want more in the first place.

Step 5: Create a Vision for Your Next Chapter
This is where it all comes together. You’ve peeled back the layers, uncovered your values, reconnected with passions, and started letting go of the stories that held you back. Now the question becomes: what’s next?
And do you know what? Your next chapter is wide open.
Not pre-written. Moreover, not bound by who you’ve been. Not dictated by anyone else’s expectations.
It’s yours.
So let yourself imagine it. Not the “safe” version. Not the “realistic” one. The one that makes your heart race a little because it feels so alive.
Ask yourself:
Now, close your eyes for a moment and picture it. See yourself waking up in that life. What does your morning look like? How do you feel as you move through your day? Who are you with? What are you doing that lights you up? Let yourself feel it — the ease, the joy, the alignment of living on your own terms.
(This is just a taste of the guided visualization I share with my clients — the one they tell me changes everything because it makes their future feel real. If you’d like the full version, reach out. I’d love to share it with you.)
Don’t just think about it — capture it. Write it down. Journal it. Create a vision board. Sketch it out in words or images until you can see yourself living it.

Because once you can see it, you can start moving toward it. And that’s how your next chapter begins.
And then, instead of trying to change everything overnight, pick one thing. One small thing to focus on, one brave step you can take in the next 90 days that moves you closer to that vision.
Because real change doesn’t come from imploding the life you’ve built. It comes from steady, brave steps that add up to transformation — and a future that feels beautiful.”
