Travel isn’t just about seeing new places; it’s about discovering new perspectives. Last year, I spent a month in Italy, and it turned out to be more than just a vacation—it was a profound lesson in how to live a more balanced, joyful, and fulfilled life.

Especially in midlife, when we often find ourselves caught between responsibilities and desires, travel can offer the clarity and inspiration we need to refocus on what truly matters.

For years, my husband and I had been saying, “Maybe next year” when it came to our dream of visiting Italy. Life was busy—work, family, commitments—there was always something that seemed more urgent. But last year, we decided it was time to stop waiting. Our daughter had left for college and the disconnect with each other from years of being constantly “too busy” was suddenly laid bare. We realized that if we didn’t make time for what mattered, life would continue to get in the way. So, we booked the trip, packed our bags, and set off for a month that little did we know, would change our outlook on life.

I expected Italy to be beautiful, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The stunning landscapes, historic architecture, and incredible food were everything I had imagined and more.

But what surprised me most was the way the Italian lifestyle shifted my perspective. The slower pace, the focus on enjoying simple pleasures, and the emphasis on community and connection made me realize how much I’d been missing by constantly rushing through life.

Italy taught me that life doesn’t have to be about constant hustle; it can be about savoring each moment. Italy taught me that life doesn’t have to be about constant hustle; it can be about savoring each moment.

A New Understanding of Balance and Freedom

One of the most important lessons I learned in Italy was about balance and freedom. The Italians seem to have mastered the art of living in the moment—whether it’s enjoying a leisurely meal with loved ones or taking an afternoon stroll through a piazza.

They don’t wait for the “perfect” time to enjoy life; they create joy in the here and now. This experience made me rethink how I approach my own life. Why wait for retirement or the “right” moment to start living fully? Life is happening now, and it’s up to us to make the most of it.

      How This Changed My Life

When we returned home, my husband and I knew we couldn’t go back to our old ways. We made a conscious decision to prioritize what truly matters—spending quality time together, traveling more, and finding joy in everyday moments. This shift didn’t require a complete life overhaul, just a change in mindset. We started saying yes to the things that bring us happiness and no to the things that don’t. This new approach has brought more connection balance and fulfillment into our lives than we ever thought possible.

We make a conscious effort to stop waiting until “tomorrow” to do the things we dream of. We now plan work and commitments around the life we want, not trying to fit life into the gaps between work and responsibilities. We’ve made travel and adventure a priority—so much so that this year, we’ve already taken five trips and have two more planned, including a return to Italy. We’ve found ways to make it work, like Airbnb-ing our home while we’re away and making sure our budget reflects our values.

      Why This Matters to You

I know that many of you are in the same boat—juggling responsibilities, putting your dreams on hold, and waiting for the “perfect” time to start living the life you want. But here’s the thing: that perfect time may never come. The lessons I learned in Italy showed me that you don’t have to wait. You can start creating balance and freedom in your life right now.

Whether it’s taking that trip you’ve been dreaming about, starting a new hobby, or simply making more time for yourself, the time to act is now.

As midlife women, it’s easy to get caught up in the demands of life and forget about our own needs and dreams. But the truth is, your dreams are worth pursuing. The lessons I learned in Italy are universal: prioritize joy, embrace balance, and don’t wait for the perfect moment to live your life.

These elements are essential for living a purposeful, fulfilling life. It’s never too late to start making changes that bring you closer to the life you’ve always wanted.

My month in Italy was more than just a getaway—it was a wake-up call. It reminded me of the importance of slowing down, living in the moment, and not waiting for some distant “perfect” time to enjoy life. I returned home with a renewed sense of purpose, determined to prioritize what truly matters.

Here are the five key lessons I learned:

      • Slow Down: Life isn’t a race—savor each moment.
      • Don’t Wait: The perfect time is now.
      • Find Balance: Prioritize joy and fulfillment.
      • Live Fully: Embrace the present and make memories.
      • Make Time for What Matters: Your dreams deserve attention.

These lessons have helped me reshape my life, and I hope they inspire you to do the same. Life is happening right now—let’s not miss it.
